A major accident between an 18-wheeler and several other vehicles closed down I-77 for a number of hours. The crash happened in the northbound lanes of I-77 near NC-150, north of Mooresville. The serious crash caused the closure of the highway while police cleared the scene and investigated the accident. I-77 North was shut down for several hours near exit 36.

Multiple Vehicles Were Involved

The accident involved a semi-truck and eight other vehicles. The 18-wheeler reportedly crashed into at least eight vehicles. Multiple people sustained injuries, and two were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Police closed down the road while they investigated the scene. Typically, law enforcement takes driver and witness statements, reviews damage, and provides a report that details the accident. In this accident, the police charged the truck driver. No other drivers were charged.

Truck Driver Charged

Police charged the truck driver with careless and reckless driving and failure to reduce speed. While an investigation is likely still ongoing, the preliminary information points to the negligence of the truck driver as the cause of the accident. It appears that the truck failed to slow down when it approached vehicles that were either slowed or stopped ahead. The truck plowed into the vehicles, leaving quite a bit of damage to vehicles.

What Causes Truck Accidents?

There are many causes of truck accidents. There is often a main cause as well as contributing causes to a crash. The cause of a crash typically fits into one of three categories including human error, mechanical problems, or weather or road conditions. The most common cause of big rig crashes is human error. Human error includes things such as distracted driving, driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, fatigued driving, and inexperience, among others.speedway-1198194-1024x681

Negligence in Accidents

A victim of a vehicle accident may recover damages from the negligent driver as long as they, themselves, were not negligent. To collect damages, you must prove the four main parts of negligence. The other driver had a duty of care, the driver breached that duty, the victim sustained damages, and the damages were caused by the other driver’s negligence. Damages include both economic and non-economic. Economic damages are those that have an actual value, such as medical bills and lost wages. Non-economic damages include such things as pain and suffering, and loss of consortium. Although we don’t know any specific details of this crash, it is likely that the truck driver’s actions may have been negligent.

If you were injured in a vehicle accident, you should take action as soon as possible. You will want to consult with a personal injury attorney to determine your options and find out how to proceed. Do not delay because the law limits the time you have to file a claim. Many cases are resolved through settlement. Those that don’t settle will get resolved in court.
