A construction worker suffered serious injuries after a fall at a construction site in Charlotte. The accident happened at a construction site located in the 1300 block of Central Avenue near Hawthorne Street. The Charlotte Fire Department responded to an emergency call for a construction worker who fell at the construction site. Dozens of first responders reported to the scene. Emergency workers had to use a construction crane to reach the injured man. Medic then transported the man to the hospital with serious injuries.

Fall Hazards

Falls can occur when the body is injured due to an incident caused by gravity. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines fall hazards as “anything at your worksite that could cause you to lose your balance or lose bodily support and result in a fall.” Falls may occur at the same level, from a level above, or down a level. Falls from the same level may happen due to obstructions in the way or impediments. A fall from above might happen from a ladder or from scaffolding that is not secure. A fall down a level happens when someone falls down stairs or through an open level to the ground below.

Examples of Fall Hazards

There are various examples of fall hazards at construction sites. One of the most common types of falls is from scaffolding. A scaffolding may collapse or be unsteady, particularly in instances where the device is not properly constructed. Another example of a fall hazard is when a worker falls through a skylight or off the edge of a building under construction. Other instances are workers who fall through a floor or a roof that is not properly supported. Fall hazards occur in situations where the proper precautions were not taken or where negligence occurred.

Construction Injuries Can Be Seriousrock-trucks-Charlotte-Monroe-Lake-Norman-Injury-Lawyer

Unfortunately, falls at construction sites can often result in serious injuries. Some of the injuries that occur include back and neck injuries, head trauma, broken bones, and internal injuries. In some cases, injuries are life-threatening and might even cause the death of a construction worker. When injuries are severe, the victim may require lengthy hospital treatment, surgeries, and rehabilitation. Long-term treatment will result in personal and family hardships.

Preventing Construction Injuries

Steps must be taken to ensure the safety of workers and others at construction sites. OSHA provides guidelines that construction companies must follow, including fall protection protocols. Safety gear and devices must be utilized to make construction workplaces as safe as possible. Managers and supervisors need to properly oversee the worksite and everyone must have adequate safety training. The failure to provide a safe workplace could be considered negligence on the part of the construction company and those in charge of the site.
