A Charlotte crash involving a large semi truck left one person dead and another seriously hurt. The crash involved two semi-trucks and two other vehicles. The accident happened on the I-485 inner loop between Mallard Creek Road and Prosperity Church Road. The initial impact occurred between a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle on the inner loop of I-485. The crash caused the tractor-trailer to veer over the median and into oncoming traffic on the outer loop. The semi then hit another semi-truck in a head-on collision.
Crash Involved Four Vehicles
There were actually two complex crashes in this incident. The first accident occurred between a semi-truck and a vehicle in the inner loop of I-485. The secondary crash happened when the driver of the big rig went over the median and into traffic headed in the opposite direction. This resulted in a head-on collision with another semi-truck. Another passenger vehicle then hit the semi-trucks. The driver of the first big rig was killed in the crash. The driver of the other big rig was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. Four other people were evaluated by medics at the scene but were not transported.

Crash is Under Investigation
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Lanes in both directions of the Interstate were closed while the scene was cleared, according to the Charlotte Fire Department, which also reported to the accident. Photos of the crash area show that the cabs of the trucks were destroyed by the accident. According to the Highway Patrol, speed was not a factor in the crash.
