North Carolina law requires all car owners to have vehicle insurance. Insurance protects you and others in the case of an accident. When you have insurance, it typically covers you by paying for damages and injuries that occur as a result of an accident. Drivers must carry at least the minimum amount of coverage as required by law. A new law in effect in 2025 changes the minimum legal car insurance that drivers must have. Drivers need to check their policies to ensure that the coverage meets the new minimum.

Liability Insurance

Liability insurance protects a car driver or owner against claims made due to damages or injuries as a result of a vehicle accident. When you review your insurance policy, you will see a section for liability coverage. The value of coverage is expressed by a series of three values separated by forward slash marks. The first number is the amount of liability coverage for one person in an accident. The second number is the coverage for other people in the accident. The third number is the coverage for property damage in an accident. These values represent the amount of money your insurance company will pay on your behalf in an accident.

The new law increases the amount of liability insurance that drivers must carry. The new coverage required in North Carolina is $50,000 for one person, $100,000 for two or more people, and $50,000 for property damage. This is represented by the numbers 50/100/50 in the liability section of an auto insurance policy. The previous minimum liability insurance was 30/60/25. All areas of the liability coverage have increased significantly.

If you carry insurance that is below the new legal liability limits for coverage, you will need to increase your policy coverage. That will mean that your vehicle insurance will likely increase in 2025. You should check your policy to verify your coverage amounts. You may already meet the minimum requirements. It may be advisable to carry more insurance than the minimum. This protects you in the event that you cause an accident with medical costs or property damages over the limit your insurance company will pay. You could be held personally responsible for any expenses over these limits.

What Happens if I Do Not Have the Required Insurance?

All drivers in North Carolina are required by law to have vehicle insurance. The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) keeps track of vehicle insurance. The state will receive a notification from your insurance provider if your policy ends or lapses. The DMV sends a notice to the owner, who has 10 days to respond. An insurance lapse or cancellation will result in a fine or penalty and restoration fee. Your license plates will be revoked, and other penalties may also apply. In some cases, your driver’s license could be suspended if you continue to drive without the proper insurance. Drivers must always carry insurance information and provide it to a law enforcement officer when requested.
